What’s the difference between a standard facelift and deep plane facelift?

There are many different types of facelift which all involve the lifting of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS). The SMAS is a facial layer composed of the platysma muscle, parotid fascia and fibromuscular layer that envelop the face and neck. 

The differences between facelift surgery depend on complexity and positioning of the incisions made by a plastic surgeon. 

While plication, imbrication and smasectomy facelifts involve the folding, bunching and part-removal of the SMAS respectively, a deep plane facelift involves dissection under the SMAS further from the ears, towards the centre of the face.

The deep plane facelift releases the deep retaining ligaments of the face so that the neck, jowl and mid-face move upwards together in a more natural direction.
